Strings

The interior label is the central element for violins: Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, Vuillaume, Bernardel, signed Mirecourt are all sought after. Caution: most "Stradivarius" labels are 19th-century apprentice copies — without value. A luthier's appraisal is essential. Signed bows (Tourte, Sartory, Voirin, Pajeot) have their own market, sometimes as high as the instrument.

Pianos

Steinway, Bechstein, Bösendorfer, Pleyel, Erard, vintage Yamaha: value depends on the state of the frame, mechanism, soundboard, and stringing. A concert grand from a great house holds its value.
